berlin-based dj and techno producer savas pascalidis has been steadily making his mark in underground electronic music circles since his first releases in the mid-90s. born in south germany and later moved to berlin, the well-traveled dj has been among the restless and classically minded members of the dance music community over the last decades. he developed skills that led him into producing records and made a name for himself with a series of dark, loopy and groove driven dancefloor orientated techno music. pure and simple. his releases earned him a reputation for being something of a dance music purist.

die form is a french post-industrial and electronic band formed in 1977-1978. the name die form means (the) form/shape in german and is a play on the english homonym deformed and on the french homonym difforme (deformed). die form is the primary project of electronic musician and multimedia artist philippe fichot. he began by recording a number of experimental cassette releases in the late 1970s and formed the bain total label to release these early cassettes, as well as various side projects such as krylon hertz, camera obscura, eva-johanna reichstag, hurt and fine automatic.

the second release on tb arthurs (312) label finds the mysterious artist revealing a collaborative project with magda as blotter trax. the pair first encountered each other at the famous motor city record store record time, when detroit artist bmg introduced his then co-workers magda and derek plaslaiko to arthur, who was visiting the shop from chicago. sometime after that meeting, magda and arthur went into the studio and jammed together for a week, the session was recorded live on analog 1/4 tape and then three tracks were selected for release. 1a is six and a half minutes of modulated synth sounds that are psyched out and sci-fi, spooky and truly atmospheric. full of cerebral cinematism, acid lines and ghoulish textures all add up to a truly standout track. 2a then marries dark wave pops and clicks, unsettling alien lifeforms and menacing, slo motion industrial drums into a physical and imposing groover riddled with paranoid sirens and drones. last of all, 2b snakes and slithers its way through undulating drums, cosmic freakiness and gloopy synth sounds that are all seductive and subversive in equal measure. this, then, is a truly fascinating pairing.

after a year from his debut ep on rlgn the artist that hides behind the srndr acronym has again something to say. “forward from past lives” is his last exploration into the conscious, memories and mind. dark, visceral and uncompromising as usual the track takes the pulsating elements already present in his frst work to a next level, stimulating a sort of hypnosis in the audience. juho kusti take over the b-side this time with a stunning personal reinterpretation of the title track that rewards the patient listener.

having previously worked with zero 7 and nightmares on wax before embarking on a solo career a few years back, mozez (aka soul singer/songwriter osmond wright) is no newcomer. the ray mang-produced run river first appeared on last year s wings full-length, and here makes it to wax for the first time. sitting somewhere between early freeez and odyssey, mang s extended vocal version is something of a soulful, soft-spun disco-funk treat. as we ve come to expect from mang, its musically rich and impeccably played, with the live instrumentation providing a deliciously organic feel. this can be heard more clearly on the excellent flipside instrumental.

eduardo makes his return to nonplus with the sensitive compartmented information ep. eduardo is one of techno’s most dedicated underground legends and continues on a path unaffected by fads or fashions. following on from his sequoia symposium in april last year again we have a 4 tracker exploring the deep realms of techno.

get weird follows on from gws last release in smooth style with this beautiful, dreamlike superlounge release. whether the sun is rising or falling both tracks create beautiful moments with their delicate melodic soundscapes. underpinned by confident drum arrangements and warm baselines each will take you somewhere quite special. just in time for the dust or for after the dust settles these tracks slowly ebb their way in to your soul. until the next time. get weird.

italian label greentech was inaugurated by minimono last year with a great remix by windy city legend paul johnson. the second edition features gaetano caruana aka caruan making his debut in production after many years of djing. -tempo reale- is an inventive and off kilter groove generated by clearly analogue means that pounds and grinds away out of sync at first, until it gradually begins to lock and it sounds great. there s some killer remixes by a real who s who of the scene and we can t help but mention all of them! first up fellow italians verrina & ventura deliver a typically stripped and rolling minimal house rendition. croatian hypnotic techno don petar dundov then delivers something more pounding and aggressive than we re used to, but we loved it all the same. finally the -eduardo de la calle tempo intrusion reale remix- sees the spanish master of trance induction deliver one of his best remixes in a while, complete with spooky sci-fi atmosphere, millsian bleeps and sonar blips.

most fans of the blues believe it was born in the mississippi delta shortly before 1900. they are definitively wrong. the blues had its roots in other forms of older black music that are traced to the music of west africa. in that sense, mali music constitutes the dna of the blues and the griots can be identified as the direct ancestors of the rural bluesmen. baba sissoko is from mali and he is the last undisputed griot alive.

the grooves of thomas white and pete williams aka natural rhythm, have been a mainstay in the sets of robsoul boss phil weeks for more than a decade. today he pays ‘tribute’ with a special re-release of some of his favourites. born in a garage in the late 90’s, natural rhythm was a meeting of passionate musical minds. working together the pair sought to create their own style and sound, influenced by the tracks they were regularly spinning in their own dj sets across the country. creative sampling and their own raw beats, together with live instrumentation and regular guest vocalists, saw natural rhythm create a strong catalogue that, as we know, are still getting played today. with three albums and over 35 ep/single releases to their name, there more than enough music for label boss weeks to select from for the tribute ep. a tough job? of course. however, phil went straight for the four that never leave his box. leading the ep are the sun-drenched vocal vibes of ‘something big’, the title track of natural rhythm’s 1999 release on under the counter. our a2 is the lead track from 2001’s last call at the martini ranch ep, ‘chicago nights’, with its quaking bassline and disco dalliance. on the flip we’re treated to a choice selection from natural rhythm’s 1999 double album contrast in nature. first up with its celestial chimes and thumping kick is ‘smoldering island’, taken from the original part 1. closing the tribute release and taken from part 2 is the devilishly funky and suitably titled feelgood jam ‘energized’. we definitely are!

london’s 22a follow up their sell-out tenderlonious / al dobson jr split ep with nine more exclusives from henry wu and jeen bassa. originally limited to just 100 copies, this has become a hugely sought after 12”!
henry wu applies jazz infused hip-hop sensibilities to these synth-boogie, and deep house tracks. this was wu’s debut release and set the platform for further massive releases on eglo and rhythm section. on the flip jeen bassa goes in deep with percussive house infused afro-beats laden with jazzy hip hop rhythms. haling from a family of talented musicians (mo kolours and reginald omas mamode iv) he has since gone on to similarly large releases, including last years sterling time waves ep on 22a.

for its fourth release, harry agius aka midlands graded label has signed its first new act in the form of montreal-based solitary dancer. with desire & apathy being instantly familiar to anyone who heard midlands essential mix earlier this year, this eponymously titled release marks the debut of solitary dancer, as well as agius second time stepping into the role of label a&r following hubie davidsons appearance on gradeds regraded sub-label last year.

tiga is a pioneer of canadian electronic music. he is not one to shy away from new sounds, and is somewhat a veteran of half a dozen different music styles. his latest album phenomenon ‘no fantasy required showcased his eclectic, individual and much-loved production style. his original single ‘make me fall in love oozes with groovyness and has been remixed by benny benassi, audion and prosumer for digital release last april via counter records. alas - the make me fall in love 12? vinyl ep arrives on turbo recordings september 30th, featuring the aforementioned prosumer remix and exclusive edu imbernon & extended mixes. the new remix from edu imbernon is clean, lean and punchy - edu comes through with the deepness while maintaining a certain degree of energy that he has become know for in his latest productions. a delightful, almost ethereal mixture of synth and vox takes this jam deep into the night, and is bound to become an ibiza closing anthem.

long-time london based friends and regular collaborators ethyl & flori have been foraying between the blurred lines of house and techno with releases on labels like secretsundaze, aim and fear of flying for the last 6 years - and with a glowing reputation under their belt, 2015 saw the duo launch their own imprint e&f records. this time however, their most recent venture is a release with london label mutual friend recordings and combines the duos talent with enigmatic label owners and friends of ours london party curators our mutual friend, their solo ep on brooklyns voodoo down records earlier this year was tipped by such luminaries as levon vincent and dj october.

hey everyone, dont be alarmed as we understand that you just heard of us a few weeks back. here we are again with another doobified doozie of a 12inch. from the furthest reaches of the canadian west coast comes a concoction by three well known faces that have a long history of working together, they prefer to remain anonymous for this 12inch for reasons beyond us. were not that good at keeping secrets and have a suspicion that you hear the rambling house that is emitted from this trio brings to your ears will recall something very familiar. johnny lumière and the triads, originally conceived as side characters of the adventures of t-bar and salary man cartoon (never published). the music was recorded during break intervals in the cartoon writing sessions (still seeking illustrator). file this under mystified house with a splash of sunshine. ps:weve been doing our own printed sleeves for the last few records from a really cool print house here in berlin. we think they look unique as they are a print/ fold out designed by our friend dave girard. people seem to be into them and figured we should say that as we are only doing limited runs of them.

most excellent unlimiteds series of 45s celebrating the 45th year of danny krivits career continues with a blast of two heavyweight cuts that, to borrow the parlance of the era from which they came, are bonafide sure shots. wood, brass & steels *funkanova* a jazz-funk masterpiece and loft classic that was liberally sampled in the house world (black science orchestra, terrence parker, the bucketheads), is pared down to its most joyous elements. from the intro, a typical krivit maestros detail of an opening bass slide prefacing hands-in-the-air cascades of iconic horns and keys, to the echo of the last notes, its a perfect edit immaculately tailored for dj usage. the flip delves deeper into new york city dance history with a rough and rugged beat- down of a proto-disco, b-boy classic: boobie knight & the universal ladys * sex*. displaying his usual knack of going straight for the jugular, krivit takes the songs siren-call-to-the-dance floor horn riff as his starting point, peeling off another layer to the floor-shaking bass and drums before bringing it all back to the top with a perfectly placed drum roll that will have flash disciples fiending for doubles. solidifying this blazing double-sider is the fact that neither of these essential cuts has ever appeared in seven-inch form. another most excellent unlimited sure shot!

soul jazz records’ new nigeria soul fever is their first release to explore the vast wealth of nigerian music recorded in the 1970s. the new album comes with introductory sleevenotes by bill brewster (author of last night a dj saved my life).
packed-full with afro-funk, disco and boogie all from nigeria, this triple album set brings together a stunning collection of diverse west african sounds. whilst a small handful of the artists featured (joni haastrup, tee mac, christy essien) have seen the light of day outside africa, this is essentially a collection of killer tracks by an array of artists completely unknown outside of nigeria.

moscoman arrived at the esp institute last year with a fistful of killer tracks and an imitable recipe for hummous, since then we’ve seen his debut with the dancefloor bomb ‘akachi’ and a collaborative follow-up release with long-time cohorts red axes. we’re now excited to enter a new chapter with moscoman’s debut full-length album ‘a shot in the light’. this creative outpouring spans years of musical trials and tribulations, finally coming full circle to tell the story of an artist leaving his home in tel aviv to pursue his passions in the electronic mecca of berlin and beyond. moscoman’s unique approach evolves and devolves over the course of eight songs, enduring highs and lows yet never resting for too long in one place—thus illustrating his personal metamorphosis as well as his acute skill of giving many voices to one wild imagination. this music is deliberate, almost cheeky with a youthful sense of optimism running throughout, and even in its most aggressive moment there is always an element of hope.

the martinez brothers cuttin headz returns with a new ep from the butcha, entitled 10001 and backed with two remixes from matrixxman. phil moffa aka the butcha is a new york city based musician, producer and engineer most notably known for his works alongside dj spider and anthony parasole for sublevel sounds / plan b recordings and alongside seth troxler for hypercolour. here we see him return to the fledgling cuttin headz imprint with his idiosyncratic take on raw, emotive house music following his destination void release alongside dj spider and brendon moeller last year. up first are two originals from the butcha, the first of which 99 prince st. lays focus on echoing atmospherics, snaking rhodes and shuffling dubbed out percussion while the latter, 6 hubert st. pivots towards an amalgamation an upfront organic rhythm alongside a weighty low end drive and wandering synth swells. to complete the package san franciscos matrixxman delivers two interpretations, firstly the acidized mix which as the name would suggest draws on squelching 303 lines layered over processed snippets from the original before the digital bonus transhuman mix closes on an arpeggio fuelled techno tip.

repress! this compilation is his second for bbe. few can match john morales contribution to the world of the enthusiast turned remixer come producer. john morales is considered one of true legends of the mix. and his work some thirty years later continues to be cutting wedge and inspiring. although familiar with john s work - his epic mix of universal robot bands boogie anthem is the source from which bbe records got its name - no attempt had been made to summarise the pinnacle of john s work. this second release is continued history lesson in dance music. he formed with the late sergio munzibai, m+m productions whose output of over 650 mixes will be unmatched by many celebrity big name remixers of today.

jonas friedlich, better known through mistress recordings and carl gari, releases his first solo 12- on molten moods. the versatile 4 track ep starts with the rather straight -bo s breakfast- that begins with a polyrhythmic 303 bass line leading into a catchy garage-ish chorus, kicking in out of a clear sky but fittingly. -bus driver- is a wicked trip, the combination of the long acid build up and a nicely chopped vocal bit is irresistible. a proven, tested (and molten moods certified) club banger, regardless of its rather untypical breakbeat. track number 3 called -praise your name- aces groove through perfectly cut vocal samples and a fancy reference to 90s hip hop and drum n bass aesthetics. the next and last piece on the record is the eponymous -deskjet-, which is inspired by friedlichs conceptual sound art installations using printers. here rather restrained synthie lines are underpinned by a powerful kick and psychedelic tape delay noises. the 12- vinyl is handstamped on both sides. mastered and cut by scape mastering. artwork by paul bernhard.

light in the attic reissues their impossible to find 1969 album, originally out on third world recordings ! 5 on kurt cobains top 50 favorite albums. philosophy of the world is a collection of garage rock tunes that balanced charm and discordance in equal measure. in 1968, three sisters from fremont, new hampshire strapped on their instruments and declared themselves the shaggs. at that moment begun a peculiar tale that would last far beyond the groups five-year run. dot, betty and helen (and occasionally rachel, the fourth sister) played in the group on the insistence of their father, austin wiggin jr., who was convinced they were going to be big. years earlier, austins mother gave him a palm reading, predicting that her son would marry a strawberry blonde woman, that he would have two sons after his mother died, and that his daughters would form a popular music outfit. the first two became reality, so austin was certain the third would follow suit.

dds prise another absolute gem from japan’s shinichi atobe, presenting 6-tracks of original, previously unreleased material recorded some time in the last 20 years in saitama, japan which perfectly complements the sublime ambient house zen of his butterfly effect album.

humanoid x is cpus deepest foray into detroit techno so far, from blixaboy aka mwanza dover texas based artist, friend of cygnus and very much part of the local electro scene. dover presents an album influenced by the pioneers of the hypnotic groove. on first pass you’ll find elements of krautrock through to the belleville three, all with finely crafted arrangements that reveal themselves in more detail on each listen. a cyberpunk theme runs throughout as blade runner-esque synths wash over the album evoking late night electric-city noodle restaurant contemplation. blixaboy has selected 4 of the more dj friendly tracks from the album for the vinyl e.p. treatment.

what happens when one of the most exciting electronic music projects of the last fifteen years meets the pioneer of cosmic disco? the result is stunning and with no doubt one of the most interesting things we have heard in a while. psycho radio was born in 2002 from an idea of the italian producer daniele tignino and sound engineer pat legato, with vocals from british singer leroy c anderson. they burst in the music scene with an innovative sound that took inspiration from the 80 s new wave, funk and electro grooves. tracks like in the undergroun and right stuff brought a breath of fresh air in those years, and they still sound very actual today. 2016 has seen the addition of producer da lukas to the project, with psycho radio now back with an explosive new single called bad reputation. once again with the captivating vocals by lc anderson. the legendary disco innovator daniele baldelli teams up once again with marco dionigi to bring us two stellar remixes that move from the funk infused vibe to their trademark cosmic balearic journey. an essential record for the final summer days.

for our milestone 50th release we felt we needed to do something special, so with that in mind we present the return of red axes to correspondant. way back in 2013 we were a new label, and they were a new face on the scene. their hit record camino de dreyfus helped propel both the label and the artist in to the established figures that both are today. avalon combines everything thats good about the axes, with their signature new wave sound taking in the tropics, but skewed through a middle eastern kaleidoscope. sequencia astronomical is familiar territory to many red axes releases, but takes everything either deeper, darker, or weirder than theyve previously ventured, showing the huge growth in their confidence in the intervening 3 years since their last correspondant ep. to round off the package correspondant also presents an as yet unavailable instrumental version of camino de dreyfus

at last! this one took literally years to piece together. does dennis bovell need an introduction? i think not but in case you dont know, he is a musical polymath, top flight producer, dub legend and one of the finest artists the uk has ever produced. optimo music has worked with dennis before when he went into green door studios and dubbed out golden teacher to the max. this disco plate ep was already in the works before then but various circumstances caused it to take until now to see the light of day

founder and a&r for life and death re-cord label. he grew up tour managing punk bands and organizing leftfield music events. now he brought his talents to the omnidisc family with this electro influ-enced polyester release.

the third release on pooledmusics techno-focused sister imprint montage welcomes back silvershower, revisiting the debut release of ian pooley’s techno alias on its 20th anniversary. the original ice fractions 1 ep arrived on plus 8 records when richie hawtin & john aquqavivas legendary label was at the height of its powers, and showcased a tougher edge to pooleys productions. two decades later pooley is still maintaining his high standards, revisiting and updating past work in the form of reissues & remixes and issuing fresh original material such as his recent turakina ep on pooledmusic and the return of silvershower last year. which marked montages launch this new edition of the first ice fractions 12inch supplies the two original lead tracks and an updated 2016 remix of each by pooley himself, satisfying both those aiming for the vintage 1996 techno sound, and those looking for a punchy update for modern techno cathedrals.

this year experienced the birth of frazer campbell s deeper imprint elliot project recordings. the london based label launched back in spring with a real statement piece, composed of detailed minimal, late night seductive twinkles and a drone styled techno piece. the labels projected thought process for the future is to navigate through a varied soundscape of deeper excursions and thoughtful techno. this second ep with two originals from frazer, also includes a remix from highly respected uk musician tom ellis who increases the heat on the track light with a energetic but thoughtful techno re work.

french artist kool vibe is back on his own paris-based label kv records with a new 4 track ep. true to the mission assigned to the label, this release brings us back to the early 90s through basics sounds and elements which have defined deep house since then : fat syncopated rhythms, heavy and groovy basslines, warm chopped vocals. there is something raw and genuine about this record. basics and back to the reala definitely emphasize the minimal and raw side of deep house. tribute is humbly dedicated to the legendary todd terry, whose ultimate knowledge of the art of sampling contributed to shape house music in the early days. at last, sleazy joint (touch it, suck it) closes the record with a nasty and sexy touch. anyway, the whole ep is meant for the dancefloor and the simple pleasure of partying.

this the second album by big funk factory d-funkt! the soundtrack to the story transaction declined traces the final adventure of dweeb droid and introduces aged rocker awm, whose perfidious character we will suffer a good deal more in the final chapter of the big funk epic bucky ball. anyway back to d-funkt! the band s usual cast features amongst others mat johnson (jamiroquai, laura doggit, julian perretta, duffy) as the nerdmeister general on keyboards. wayne nunes and perry melius (tricky, aswad, billy ocean) as that tall bloke and the metrognome on bass and drums

delooped records are back with their first ep for 2016 from loopdeville and his first solo record in the last 2 years. grooves pt.1 consists of 4 groovy tracks ready for the dance floor.

berlin-based producer lapien serves up an atmospheric three tracker on radio slaves rekids. also known as metropolis or one half of artefakt, nick lapiens last three releases have landed on finale sessions, fred ps soul people music and dvs1s mistress recordings. releasing on rekids, the multifaceted dutch artists next outing features three mesmerising cuts with the dusky a change is gonna come initiating the package using infectious hats, subtle sub-bass and an indistinguishable vocal that ebbs subtly in and out of the mix. as it is is the most robust number on the package with its undulating percussion and moody chords taking centre stage, until vexed concludes everything with gloomy pads, shuffling hats and echoing effects.

he s not what you d call a prolific producer but the old saying of quality over quantity couldnt ring truer for marcellis. with just 3 releases in the last 12 years starting with a single on 2004, followed by an ep on workshop and then his album on millions of moments, any new work is highly anticipated. its been a long time coming for nonplus but every bit worth the wait. 3 tracks covering a range of styles from the ice cold analogue quirkiness of sleep, to the bumping 4/4 offering of indigo skyfold through to the jazzed out chugger can they do tha (g love real raw) its an honour to have marcellis as an addition to the catalogue.

soul of hex have previously released on freerange and cvmr from mexico (their debut lip reading included remixes from larry heard and vin sol and their most recent ep was remixed by glenn astro.) soul of hex recently contributed tracks to the 20 years of freerange compilation as well as deep love 15 on dirt crew. new soul of hex material coming soon on quintessentials and his own vicario ltd label.soul of hex made their boiler room debut last year.

bristol is a tight knit place and there has always been a healthy culture of collaboration in the city, lmye (lend me your ears) are the latet in that tradition. two friends who met, and for a period recorded above the idle hands shop on stokes croft. they made their debut on funkineven’s apron label earlier in 2016 with the ‘cali 76’. here they keep things closer to home with a release on idle hands.
‘manhattan’ is as indebted to ’70s us funk as it is to ’90s uk garage. a house tune that has turned heads on the various mixes it has found itself on over the last year.
over on the flip shanti celeste turns in a brilliant remix, one of her best we think.
